Just a quick update tonight. Ana’s counts were all normal on Tuesday with the exception of her blood sugar which was elevated. This is a common side effect of Prednisone, but since her blood sugar was normal last week, the oncologist on hand at the time (Dr. Hochberg was off) said that Ana would need her blood sugar checked again this week. We’re going to her pediatrician tomorrow morning to get her blood drawn and if her sugar is still high, she will need to be hospitalized and given insulin. They don’t want to wait until next week’s chemo infusion (on Tuesday) to check her blood sugar level again so while this is pretty serious, Dr. Hochberg said that she’s not extremely concerned at this point.
Ana’s sugar level was 173 (normal range is like 80 – 90) and Dr. Hochberg said that she gets concerned when the level is 200 or higher on a fasting blood sugar (Ana had eaten already when she got her blood drawn on Tuesday). She also plans to wean Ana off of the steroid starting next week and switch to Celebrex, which is an anti-inflammatory medication.
We will get the blood test results on Friday and at that point we’ll know if she needs to be admitted so they can get her blood sugar under control. I really hope that Ana can stay out of the hospital. The 5th/6th grade Halloween Dance is Friday…
