The surgery will take anywhere from 2.5 hours to….he can’t tell us exactly how long it will be until he sees what’s going on firsthand.
He can’t anticipate how long her hospital stay will be, but he did say that the earliest she could be released was on Monday (the surgery is Friday). They need to ensure her pain is managed, her bowels are functioning and she’s moving around before they can discharge her.
Her first day of school would be the Thursday following the week of surgery. When I asked if she could possibly go back that early (assuming she was discharged before then). he said he can’t anticipate how long her recovery time would be because every patient is different.
My key take away? Go with the flow.
Well, fuck. I guess I’ll try to take comfort in the things we have control over. At least there’s some things I can now predict will definitely keep happening – over and over again.
Driving to the hospital for scans. Waiting breathlessly for the results. Getting the results and not quite understanding their implications. Driving to the hospital for surgery. Waiting breathlessly while she’s in the OR and then anxiously hoping her recovery will go as smoothly as possible. Waiting for discharge. Going home. Being glad to go home even though we know we’ll be back at the hospital for something in the not-to-distant future.
It’s Groundhog Day at the Dooleys only the ending is always the same.
It occurs to me that I’m feeling overwhelmed. Well, actually, a nice woman on the Inspire boards politely suggested this when I mentioned I nearly broke down crying yesterday when they were putting Ana’s IV in before the CT scan (she’s had dozens of IV’s at this point and she was totally fine except for that one small flinch she always does right when the needle goes in).
So…surgery next Friday – 8/29. I asked several times if Ana was DEFINITELY on the schedule. I even asked Dr. Middlesworth. His reply? “I don’t think it’s productive to talk about how we do scheduling.” To which I responded, “Sure – I just want to make sure there’s no chance that we’ll show up only to have her not on the schedule – which is nearly what happened TODAY.” He said that he doesn’t normally perform surgery on Wednesdays so they were trying to get an OR on an off-day and weren’t able to secure it. See? Was it so difficult to explain to me how things work?
