Kindness and Another Wish Granted
This is going to be a post about another of Ana’s wishes fulfilled. It will contain many photos of Ana and Emily having a wonderful time on this family vacation that happened all because Ana had a wish to meet her favorite actress on the set of her favorite show.
But I want to start out with a note about kindnesses – because dozens of kindnesses happened to make this trip possible.
Maia: She reached out to her manager, who knows Zooey and within days of me posting Ana’s wish list, confirmed that, yes, Ana could meet Zooey on the set of New Girl if only I could get her to L.A.
Mason: Maia’s manager who worked diligently to connect me with Todd a Fox Studio executive who arranged the meeting – twice – because it had to be rescheduled when the girls got the flu.
Todd and Kylie from Fox: They made sure that EVERYTHING was taken care of for our studio tour and meet and greet with Zooey. They were awesome and sweet and incredibly accomodating.
Jeremy Shatan from Hope & Heroes Cancer Fund at CHONY: Jeremy connected us with the donor family that paid for our plane tickets, rental car and hotel. So, basically, our entire trip. He is the definition of kindness and compassion. Please do take the time to visit Hope & Heroes web site, and donate a little money to the cause.
Gretchen: From Gulls Way Travel who was on the phone with me for HOURS (off and on) starting at 6 a.m., the morning of our originally scheduled trip (which was a Sunday). She rescheduled everything and made it all okay within the span of a day.
Our Donor Family (who found us through Hope & Heroes): I don’t know you, but I am so grateful for your generosity. Thank you – a thousand thank you’s – for doing this for our family. You have granted Ana’s wish, and by paying for the bulk of the expenses, enabled her us to fund another wish. I thought about you the entire trip. So in that way, you traveled with us. You made it possible.
Ula and Tula: My friend Ula auctioned off a rare Tula baby carrier and raised over $10,000 for Ana’s wishes. Much of this money was used for whatever the donor family didn’t cover including paying for travel insurance, room service, meals, and a very fun shopping spree on the Santa Monica Pier. This isn’t the first wish that that the generous parents from Tula Love will help fund – we will use some of this money for a trip to England as well.
Laura: The winner of the Tula Baby Carrier. She won the carrier, and auctioned it off AGAIN to raise money for Ana’s wishes, and also for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation because she has a toddler with CF. She then donated an additional $1200 for Ana’s wishes (after the Tula carrier she won had already raised over 10K!) This is a baby carrier on a mission!!
Zooey: She couldnt have been nicer and more down to earth. She let my girls stand close to her while I took photos, she made small talk, she didn’t rush us or make us feel uncomfortable. She made time for a child who needed her in that moment.
Jason: My neighbor who fed our cats, our fish and took our garbage to the curb while we were gone. He’s not just a neighbor, he’s a friend.
Amy: My sister (in law), but really, my sister, who house sat on Wednesday and got her ear scratched by my stupid cat when she tried to save him from the closet installer who is part of Ana’s next wish (her room redo).
Ike & Peter: Ana’s teachers, who told us to please have fun, and sent work along so Ana could do it while away, and made being away from school for an entire week a little easier.
Patrick and Ally: Emily’s teachers, who did the same…
JetBlue: Who gave us a credit for the missed flight in February and allowed us to apply it to this week’s trip. And they let Ana board early when she was sick from her oral chemo on the trip there, and helped us manage the crisis of her getting (very) sick on the flight home (again, likely from oral chemo).
Brett and Nick: for holding down the fort at work while I was away.
Kit: You know why I’m thanking you.
I’m sure I’m forgetting people and I’m sorry. Dozens of kindnesses – big and small – have added up to the perfect wish fulfilled. The perfect memories for Ana, for Emily, for Jim and I…The perfect everything. We are not a family that travels much. We’ve taken very few week-long vacations (actually, the trip to Atlantis funded by Make A Wish was the first). This was a precious, coveted gift for all of us. It couldn’t have happened without our extended network of friends, family and community.
Now for those pictures.
