Music For the Soul
It’s no secret to those who read this blog that both my girls can sing. I’ve posted numerous videos of their performances at their school’s annual variety show. Ana has also had the opportunity to sing with Elizabeth Mitchell and she performed at both of her benefit concerts in 2012 and 2013. She is like her father – so musical that it’s almost like a sixth sense. Their brains process music differently than mine (Emily’s as well). From their perspective, I am deaf when it comes to music. I can’t hear what they hear.
From my perspective, what they do is pure magic. I am the perfect audience, in this sense, but also extremely imperfect because I like things they hate and I can’t hear (or appreciate) music the way they do. So sometimes (admittedly) I hate what they love.
Ana began playing guitar right after her liver transplant around March 2013 and her strength as a musician has grown through this additional outlet.
This is a long-winded way of introducing a few videos from Ana’s most recent performance in Paul Green Rock Academy’s Jimi Hendrix show this past weekend. Ana played lead guitar (her first guitar solo) in one song, Little Wing, and sang the lead in two songs. She also played back up guitar and sang back up vocals in a few other songs. It was an amazing experience for her, and she is looking forward to doing another Rock Academy show.
I never liked Hendrix much before. I found the guitar solos harsh and grating (again, my musical deafness worked against me). But after listening to Ana practice these songs over and over again, and hearing them in their entirety on all our long drives to and from Woodstock (where Rock Academy is located), something clicked in my head. I realized that the guitar sounded like another voice, and that voice made sense to me, doubly so when I watched Ana – and all the children – play. Maybe there’s hope for me and she can teach me how to really hear music.
Ana said I could post her performances on the blog. Remember, these are kids – it’s not all perfect – but it is definitely magical.
Little Wing (Ana on Lead Guitar)
Castles Made of Sand (Many thanks to my brother-in-law, Stefan Bolz, for this amazing video).
All Along the Watchtower (Many thanks to Paul Green for getting my kid to belt it out like this – I will forever love this song).
Thank you for indulging me in my bit of mamma pride. Ana has a CT scan on Friday – please send out white light, prayers and tons of positive energy for the best possible results.
