PICU – Day 6 – 9:45 pm
Jim reports that the day was fairly uneventful with Ana getting up a lot more to sit in a chair, but not really able to walk because of all the lines that are still attached to her. She also ate a little bit more. That’s the good news.
The bad news is her white blood cell count came back high, which is worrisome and they started her on some type of antibiotic (she was already on two antibiotics, including Bactrim, but I don’t know what else they’re adding). She got a blood culture taken today and as of now Jim has not heard back on the results of this – I am guessing they’ll tell him the results during rounds tomorrow morning.
I’m not calm right now. When I called in to check on Ana tonight she told him the surgical site was bleeding a little (while I was on the phone with him) and it turned out that it’s swollen on one side. I don’t know how swollen. They are calling in someone from the liver team to take a look. Jim says this person should be there within an hour. One possibility (per the resident that Jim spoke with) is that blood pooled under the skin and caused the swelling. We don’t know what this means – it’s obviously serious enough to call a surgeon in to take a look, but beyond that we don’t have answers.
I thought I was going to be able to relax at home and get some sleep. I don’t know why I let myself start to hope that we were through the worst of it. I’m never going to let my guard down. I hate this.
