The Last Crane
I wrote this piece a week before Ana died. The Washington Post accepted it a week after and I updated the ending. The photos of the cranes were taken by Phil Mansfield and Ana’s school photo was taken by Juliet Lofaro.
When I was a new mother, I focused on firsts – the first smile, the first step, the first day of school – and all the countless, tiny triumphs in between that are the reward of motherhood. Even so, those years were hard.
